A great closing to a great year

Caitlin Starks
 10th grader

Caitlin Starks a 10th grader at Akins High School has kept her head held high all school year and ready to let go this summer.  She gets her work done and in her free time she relaxes by playing computer games.
Caitlin has worked hard all year, kept up her grades, it has paid off and shown with a Trustee award; “If you’re in the top ten percent of your class, the school sends you a paper in the mail,” Caitlin said of how getting a Trustee award works.
Starks has had a good year with her grades, she’s gotten an award for being in the top ten percent and the top three of her class. Her parents have helped her keep her grades up, she said.
“I have so much pressure from my parents, they tell me I’m going to be the kid to go to college,” she said.
Starks had a special saying that helped her through the year. “My self motto for the year would be keep your head held high and don’t get in over yourself.” She said it meant be yourself and don’t act like something you’re not. Her motto has helped Starks keep focus and stay true to herself all school year.
Starks has good grades and is prepared for her classes, but in her down time, she lets go by playing computer games.
“ My version of fun is sitting at the computer playing games,” she said.
Caitlin thinks it’s not the most fun thing compared to others, but it matches her personality, which she described as laid back.
Caitlin is definitely ready to end this year, she has plans of going to New Mexico for an art show, and she’s already excited for what the next school year has in store.  “I’m going to be in NHS, newspaper, and a bunch of other things,” Starks said,
“I’m most excited to be doing newspaper next year,” she said.
Starks said newspaper is the most exciting because she’ll be able to write, which is what she likes to do.

Favorite Yearbook Spread

This is my favorite spread because almost everyone can relate to it especially me. It claims all the top clothing items people wanted in 2010 and they are mostly accurate. I like how it lists the top items and then around the page there are pictures of people around the school wearing those items in style.

    Magazine Covers

Early magazine covers didn't have adds all over the cover, they were modeled after book covers with only the title of the magazine and the publication name and some type of photo.
The magazine cover era after the early magazine was posters. The magazine cover would be oversized and would have an artistic design.
The 20th century magazine covers were big title lines. The name of the magazine would be huge so it would capture readers to read it.
Magazine covers now are all about the body of the cover photo and how big the title line is.

36  formal   This cover of People features a black and white photograph of Princess Diana, and the issue is a tribute to her life after she was killed in August 1997 in a car crash. Diana appeared on the cover of the magazine a record 52 times and was one of the most popular People cover subjects. In 1981, she married Prince Charles and arguably became one of the most famous women in the world. She was lauded for her high-profile involvement in AIDS issues and for an international campaign against landmines. Diana's death was greeted with extraordinary public grief, and her funeral at Westminster Abbey drew an estimated three million mourners in London, as well as worldwide television coverage.
This magazine cover is a good portrait of Princess Diana because it shows who she is and views can understand her. The portrait is formal because she's dressed nice and the background is very casual.

    Best Portrait

This is my best portrait because there is framing around the subject and it captures her personality. The subject is being herself and acting casual. The framing around the subject lets you identify the subject easily and it makes her stand out. The background of the portrait is good because it's a plain color and your eyes don't leave the subject because of the distractions around her.

    Portrait Photography

    Self- Portrait -

    Professional Portait-

Formal- This portrait is formal because the subject doesn't have much emotion to their face and the background is very simple, and the only prop in the photo is the American flag that's almost out of the portrait.

Informal- This photo is informal because the subject is very causal. The portrait is average and looks like it took no time to plan or take. The subject isn't really dressed fancy; he's dressed in everyday, walking the street clothes which makes the portrait informal.

Environmental- This photo is environmental because the background is the outdoors and it's very peaceful.

    • To me a good portrait is when the photo is focused up close on the subject with a very casual background. A good portrait looks good to me when the subject has very little emotional expressed on their face or body; the subject makes you wonder what they're thinking. I would also say a good portrait is when the photographer tries to show something unique about the subject, whether it's what they like to do or something special about them like a talent. A portrait is also good when it's unique and not following the trend of other people;  the photographer can follow the trends but maybe they can put their own spin on it so it's a little unique.
    • When I do my own portrait, I would want to capture my subject in action doing something. I'd want to show my subject's personality so viewers can get to know the subject.

    Post Academics shoot reflection

    Framing--
     1. The rule was kinda followed, to follow the rule exactly the picture needs a little more objects on around the border.
    2. The subject is the girl in the multi colored jacket.
    3. The subject is clear to the picture because she's directly in the middle.
    Rule of Thirds--
    1. This picture follows the rule perfectly because if you were to divide the picture in to a tic tac toe border the subject would be directly in one coulmn.
    2. The subject of the picture is the girl in the black jacket to the left.
    3. The subject is clear to viewers because she's the only person in the picture.

    Balance--

    1. The rule of balance was followed a little in this picture, it could have been followed better if I would have had them seperated a little bit more.
    2. The subjects in this picture is the boy in the white jacket and the girl in the black jacket.
    3. The subjects are clear in this picture becuase they are the only people in the photo.

Lines-- 1. This photo follows the rule of lines well, because there are lines followed to the subject of the photo.
    2. The subject of the photo is the boy in the black jacket.
    3. The subject is well identified because all the lines in the photo lead to him.

    Avoiding Merges--
    1. The rule in this photo of avoiding mergers is followed a little.
    2. The subject in this photo is the girl in the black jacket.
    3. The subject might be well identified well because she 's off to the side and the teacher cut off is by another girl.
    4. I could have followed the rule a little better if maybe objects looked too close to some people.

    1. This photo only follows the rule of simplicity a little tiny bit.
    2. The subject of this photo is of the girl in the black jacket.
    3. The subject is well identified because she is the only person in the photo and she is directly in the middle.
    4. The rule of simplicty could have been followed better if there weren't so many desks in the background.
    Simplicity--

    1. Some problems I had while taking photos was that some backgrounds weren't perfect for the rule I was trying to follow or one that I needed.
    2. Some techinical aspects while doing the assignment was framing. In some photos I wanted a frame for it and I couldn't find the perfect way to get a frame around the subject.
    3. If I could do the assignment again, I wouldn't try to follow the examples I saw before, and I would just go with my insticts for the photo I wanted.

    Academics Preview

THE STORY-- The students are holding hands around a flag pole, I think they are doing this because they are reminecing the people who died in 9/11.

ACTION AND EMOTION : The emotion in this picture is good because is shows students caring for people in their community by feeding the homeless.
FILLS THE FRAME: This picture is interesting because it shows a program in a high school that people think is really cool and interesting.

    Super Bowl Ads Review

    1. 65 ads
    2. The funniest ad was the race with all these dogs and the little bulldog won just because he was wearing Sketcher shoes. It was funny because the odds of a bulldog winning a race against greyhounds isn't likly but he only won because he was wearing Sketcher shoes.
    3. The most controversial ad was
    4. The best ad was "Broderick's Day Off". It was the best because it was a play on Matthew Broderick taking a day off from work like in the 80's movie Ferris Bueller's Day Off.
    5. I think people the next day talked about the M&M commercial of Sexy and I Know it because everyone loves M&Ms and  a Top 40 song.
    6. I think the worst ad was of John Stamos flirting a girl by eating Greek yogurt, it was the worst because it was stupid.
    7. The ad people will forget about the Coca Cola bear commericials because they were kinda boring.

    1. An average Super Bowl 30 second commercial costs $3.5 million
    2. 111-million plus people are expected to watch the Super Bowl
    3. 70 Super Bowl advertisers
    4. half put their ad online before the game
    5. The most common subject in ads of the Super Bowl were kids, celebrities, sex and humor

    The Camera

    1. Camera obscura is when light focuses in a dark area. It happens when a tiny hole is created in a wall of a room and the light through the hole focuses on an object of a dark room.
    2. In the 17th century, the modern camera became one step closer when Isaac Newton and Christina Huygens created high quality glass lenses.
    3. The part of the first modern digital camera that Joseph Nicéphore Niépce invented was film.
    4. Modern digital cameras and Niepce's camera both have in common is film.
    5. Digital cameras use an electronic sensor called a CCD to capture images.

    6. The differences between Auto Mode and Program Mode is auto mode uses flash, program mode is when you just point and shoot.
    7. Portrait mode is used for blurring out the background in a photo. You use it to blur out the background.
    8. The Sports mode is used for freeze motion. You would use it to freeze someone in a sport event.

    9. You should use the half-press on the trigger button because it's easier to aim at the subject of the photo.

    10. This picture means disabled flash, or no flash. You would use it when you want natural light.
    11. This means auto flash, it happens when the camera thinks the photo needs more lightning.

    12. When your photo has too much light, it will be washed out.
    13. If your photo doesn't have enough light, the photo will be too dark.

    14. A stop is a relative measure of light.
    15. 1 stop is brighter if the planet if had two sons instead of one
    16. 2 stops is brighter if the planet had four sons instead of two.
    17. The affect of a long shutter speed  is more light .
    18. The affect of a short shutter speed is less light.
    19. The apeture controls the amount of light passing through.
    20. When adjusting the apeture, you increase the amount of light by

    Finding a Feature

Girl Scout USA to honor Austin girl for role in saving friend's life

Characters: Lilly, Chris, and Joe Valentino

"When the three came to a fork in the trail, Valentino and Lilly decided to explore one path down the mountain, while Chris tried out another route."  Why didn't they just test out the other paths together as a group, then none of them would have gotten hurt?

    1. The focus of this story is on a seventh grade girl named Lilly.
    2. This story is different than others beause it gives a perspective from each character and not just one person in the story.
    3. I would need to interview the girl, the boy and the dad from the story to get a full feature story.
    4. What made you so brave to help your friend?
Were you scared to see what happened to your friend?
Were you surprised by how well Lilly handled this?

Human interest value of the story: the good details of how everything happened

Three adjectives of the characters would be:
    Brave
    Secure
    Caring

    Feature Leads and Descriptive Writing

    Fatal Distraction
    Gene Weingarten
    • "The defendant was an immense man, well over 300 pounds, but in the gravity of his sorrow and shame he seemed larger still. He hunched forward in the sturdy wooden armchair that barely contained him, sobbing softly into tissue after tissue, a leg bouncing nervously under the table. In the first pew of spectators sat his wife, looking stricken, absently twisting her wedding band. The room was a sepulcher. Witnesses spoke softly of events so painful that many lost their composure. When a hospital emergency room nurse described how the defendant had behaved after the police first brought him in, she wept. He was virtually catatonic, she remembered, his eyes shut tight, rocking back and forth, locked away in some unfathomable private torment. He would not speak at all for the longest time, not until the nurse sank down beside him and held his hand. It was only then that the patient began to open up, and what he said was that he didn't want any sedation, that he didn't deserve a respite from pain, that he wanted to feel it all, and then to die."
    • "The toddler slowly sweltered to death, strapped into a car seat for nearly nine hours in an office parking lot in Herndon in the blistering heat of July."
    Julia Keller
    • "Ten seconds. Count it: One. Two. Three. Four. Five. Six. Seven. Eight. Nine. Ten. Ten seconds was roughly how long it lasted. Nobody had a stopwatch, nothing can be proven definitively, but that's the consensus. The tornado that swooped through Utica at 6:09 p.m. April 20 took some 10 seconds to do what it did. Ten seconds is barely a flicker. It's a long, deep breath. It's no time at all. It's an eternity."
    • "If the sky could hold a grudge, it would look the way the sky looked over northern Illinois that day. Low, gray clouds stretched to the edges in a thin veneer of menace. Rain came and went, came and went, came and went."
    Pearls Before Breakfast
    Gene Weingarten
    • "HE EMERGED FROM THE METRO AT THE L'ENFANT PLAZA STATION AND POSITIONED HIMSELF AGAINST A WALL BESIDE A TRASH BASKET. By most measures, he was nondescript: a youngish white man in jeans, a long-sleeved T-shirt and a Washington Nationals baseball cap. From a small case, he removed a violin. Placing the open case at his feet, he shrewdly threw in a few dollars and pocket change as seed money, swiveled it to face pedestrian traffic, and began to play. "
    • "It was 7:51 a.m. on Friday, January 12, the middle of the morning rush hour. In the next 43 minutes, as the violinist performed six classical pieces, 1,097 people passed by. Almost all of them were on the way to work, which meant, for almost all of them, a government job."
