Column Writing Analysis

Listen for KISS-FM mornign host Bobby Bones in cities nationwide
2. Gary Dinges
3. It's worthy to be written for because many people in Austin listen to Bobby Bones in the morning as they get ready for work, and to know that many other people across North America will be listen is something people in Austin would want to know.
4. What probably inspired Gary to write about Bobby Bones going nationwide is because he probably listens to the show himself and he shows interest to what will happen to it in the future.
5. Gary's point in the column is that KISS FM's morning show with Bobby Bones is going nationwide and people in Washington state will be listen to one of our own locals.
6. The writer gained information for the column from Bobby himself and the rest of the radio to get words directly from the people it's impacting.
7. I would rate this column average because it is almost the same as a new story and he doesn't have alot of his own opinions in it. But I do like his use of quotes from people and how they back up his sentences. I also like how he used a list of radios Bobby will be on .
8. The only I didn't like about the column was it was all just facts no opinions or how he felt about Bobby Bones going nationwide.
9. I liked the column. I learned alot about how the morning radio show got started and where they found alot of the people for the show. I  think it will be great have people in other states here about an Austin local and how he lives an everyday life.

Editorial Exploration

1. Goodbye to old UT vs. A&M game

This editorial is praising the game between UT and A&M on Thanksgiving day because it is they last game they will play. "There is no one alive today who can't remember a time when these two Texas schools didn't play a football game against each other."
I agree with  this statement because it's true that no one alive remembers a Thanksgiving day that UT and A&M didn't play against each other because the tradition started in the early 1800's. I chose this quote from the editorial because it's a quote that is just pointing out that this game is a tradition in many Texas families because it's been played every year for so long.

 2. Water conservation a habit we must keep

This editorial is informing us about the water restrictions we have right now in Austin because of the drought we're in. " Austin enacted Stage 2 water restrictions Sept. 6. City water customers responded by using 100 million fewer gallons of water during the first week of the new watering "
I agree that the quote is informing us about the Stage 2 water restrictions because it is saying that Austin is cutting down on using water because of the level up in the watering restriction stages. I chose this quote because being in a Stage 2 water restriction means we all need to cut down on water and it says that Austin did what they were told to do and cut down on water.

3. Wet weekend welcome diversion fromn drought

This editorial is praising the rain we just got and saying how this is a good sign for a city who is in a deep drought. "The weekend's rain, as nice as it was, and as much as it might green things up for a couple of weeks, was no drought-buster, as you know. Camp Mabry received a couple of inches of rain but remains about 15 inches behind the yearly average."
I agree that the quote is praising the rain because it talks about how nice it was and how it was good to get it. I chose this quote because it talks about how nice the rain was after being in such dry hot weather the past months.

Types of Questions

An open-ended question- A question that forces the interviewee to answer with more than a yes-no or one-word answer.

A close-ended question-  A question that allows the interviewee to answer with a yes-no or one-word answer.

A follow-up question-  A question that originates from listening to something the interviewee says.

Interviews: Preparing Questions and Listening

1. To avoid one word answers ask more questions, use the word "why" alot.

2. The questions all interviews have in common are, "What is it like to be you?".

3. A problem with sticking to a lists of questions in an interview is that the interviewer askes questions and doesn't listen to the answer.

4. The interviewer who asks his own questions and doesn't go with what the interviewee says, it won't make sense.

5. If you talk more than ten percent of the time in an interview, you've been talking too much. The result would be is the interview would be about the reporter and not about the interviewee.

6. The interviewee would give you deep thoughts if you don't ask too many questions and just listen to the answer.

7. The more interesting thing in an interview to watch is the interviewee's body language and behavior.

Lead Writing

Who: John Jacob Jingleheimer-Smith, Roger Clementine
What: A two vehicle head on collision
When: Sunday, 4:45pm
Where: Austin, First Street and Slaughter Lane
Why: Underaged driver
How: Driving the wrong way and speeding

The most important news element in the story is that the driver who caused the accident was underaged.

AUSTIN-- A two vehicle head-on collision occured Sunday afternoon when a thirteen year old boy took his uncle's 1948 Studbaker car.

AUSTIN-- An underaged driver took his uncle's car and caused a head-on collision by driving in the wrong direction, late Sunday afternoon.

The Three Little Pigs

There was a wolf who was blowing down little pigs' house, he successfully blew down two houses and ate the two pigs in the houses. When the wolf came to a pig's house made of bricks he couldn't blow down the house, so he tried to get in the house through the chimmeny. The pig lit a fire and placed a kettle of water over the fire under the chimney, the wolf fell into the kettle and boiled to death.

The pig of the brick house lives at 578 Wallow Drive, in Baconville.  When he saw the wolf climb up the roof that's when he started a fire and placed a kettle of water over it. The wolf went for two other pigs houses right before he went to the brick house.  The first two pigs were eaten and the pig in the brick house was not hurt at all. The first two pigs' houses could not stand up to the wolf because they were made of straw and sticks.

The three victims of the wolf were brothers who used to live with their mother, and they were sent to go find their own homes. The wolf loved to eat pigs. The pig of the brick house lit the fire and set a kettle of water over it for self protection.

Remembering 9-11

"We saw the first plane hit, we thought it was a horrible accident. When the second plane hit we realized it was terriorism." --David Wessel

On 9/11/01 I was 4, I was at daycare when the planes hit the World Trade Center. That night and the next few days on the news, I saw pictures of smoke and builds pumished. I didn't know what had happened. My mom said bad people flew there plane into the building because they didn't like us. I still didn't understand what was happening. Now ten years later I know why 9/11 was so bad. We were attacked because the US wasn't liked. We were attacked by someone who wanted to punish us because he didn't like our country. I now know 9/11, many people died in the builds attacked, and everyone was affect by the terroist attack.

Analyzing the News

Fires destroy hundreds of homes

Many people are being affected because their homes are being destroyed by a fire. Hundred of homes are being destroyed by a fire that no one is able to stop right now.

This story is about  a wildfire that started sunday, September 5, and that is still burning now. The fire has been burning hundreds of homes and firefighters are having trouble putting it out because the high wind gusts are carring it farther. Firefighters are doing everything they can right now but becuase of the wind it is very difficult.

This fire started September 5, and is still burning now, September 6.

This fire takes place in Bastop county, Steiner Ranch and Cedar Park, Texas, all Central Texas. It is important that it is happening in Central Texas because of the drought, the grass is so dry.

Reports say the Bastrop fire started by three small wildfires and they came together and made one big wildfire. Reports say the Steiner Ranch fire started by a lit cigarette but they don't know for sure.

Wildfires are starting because of the dry grass. Lit cigarettes are being thrown out moving cars and falling on dry grass starting sparks and a wildfire to start.
